Intent
At the William Hogarth school, we support our nursery children in developing the skills needed in order to learn to listen, speak and meet the high expectations for behaviour by working together and being kind.
We support children to develop effective learning habits through the Characteristics of Effective Learning – Play and Exploration, Active Learning and Creative and Critical Thinking.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) and Communication and Language are curriculum areas which are prioritised within our setting, as we know that a happy, independent and confident child is a successful leaner.
Implementation
Our children learn through their engagement with a range of learning opportunities that include child-initiated and adult-directed activities. Our nursery day is structured around the provision of extensive opportunities for children to develop their learning and skills in PSED and Communication and Language. The provision within the setting delivers challenging experiences which support the development of all children.
The EYFS curriculum is accessible both indoors and outdoors. The provision is designed in a cross-curricular manner which supports holistic learning and development including Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design as well as to promote sustained thinking and active learning. Children develop mathematical concepts by exploring specifically planned activities indoors and outdoors.
Our planning is based around stories that follow a specific theme and incorporates children’s interests and needs. Early years staff are fully engaged in children’s activities and ensure that their next steps are developed according to their individual needs.
Impact
The EYFS curriculum is centred on the needs of the children, inclusive of disadvantaged children and those with Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND). Learning is evaluated by communication with children and observing their learning experiences and interactions with others. Staff use ongoing observational assessments to identify children’s starting points and plan experiences and support which ensure children’s next steps and ongoing progress.
