Years 5 and 6 went to Chiswick House and gardens to do some horticulture as part of their Science curriculum
'Last Wednesday, Year 5 and 6 went on a fascinating trip to Chiswick House & Gardens. First, we were greeted by our tour guides and their dog - his name was Monty and he was super friendly! We were each handed a pair of gloves. Next, we went into the woods and there was a huge pile of sticks. We had to weave the sticks in and around standing logs to create a dead hedge fence, linking to our DT work. I did get scratched, but the fun made it worth it! On our way there, we saw a greenhouse full of plants and the sun reflecting on it. The tour guides handed us all a sheet of different types of leaves for us to explore and find in the woods. We were also given a brown paper bag to store our findings to take home - I felt like a real gardener! After our group photo, we made our way back as we identified lots of different types of birds.
Some highlights of the trip were: Hearing about the 'Let the light in project' which informed us about the importance of sacrificing some trees to allow surrounding smaller trees and plants get light for them to flourish. Also some of us were lucky enough to build a home for hedgehogs and labelled it a hibernacle. As we left, we were set a challenge to catch a falling leaf from a tree before it hits the ground. The whole experience was super fun, I would definitely go again! 10/10 would recommend!'
